Okay...

I think that if you did it:

1. at night
2. during a large water change
3. palcing rocks in a manner that the fry could hide
4. feeding the tank right after the water change is complete
and then
5. watch them for a bit then turn the light off for the night

you might be okay...

I have about 4 Maswa fry that I'm preparing to do this with...

Or u could just dump them in and not make things complicated. Tropheus aren't carnivorous. Only time I've seen problems is when the fry are freshly spit. Better safe than sorry I guess

Josiah....? Please don't take this the wrong way...

You can't honestly suggest that as the best thing to do, can you?

Granted that they may not have the digestive system for regular carnivorous meals. But that doesn't mean that they won't try it out... lol

I wouldn't recommend just dumping them in. I would at least take some appropriate measures. He wants to grow the fry that he has with the rest of the colony. 1.5"+ should be fine with the right steps. Maybe he could get away with feeding the colony and then dumping the fry in during or afterwards. But that would be the bare minimum work required in my opinion.

Look at this way... If he does just dump in the fry and they get stressed out and get bloat, that could spread to the rest of the grown colony.

Why risk that? If you wanted to do that on your own, that is by all means your prerogative and you absolutely have the right to share your experience. But I wouldn't suggest it to anyone intentionally.

JMTC...

Nah, that's safe but not necessary. I've dumped 3/4" fry in my tank full of adults and nothing happened. You really think an herbivore would exhaust energy trying to eat a 2" fish? I've dumped hundreds of fry in my adult tank and never had a problem. That's a pretty big sample space. It's not theory on my end. Look at my canary cheek video. At one point I had 80 fry in that tank and they were all 1/2" to 2". Never any problems. That method you suggested is for adding other adult fish to avoid aggression. Petros and gobies in the tank then yeah, but with tropheus it shouldn't be a problem with fry that are 1.5-2".

My suggestion is not to make someone else's nonimportant but rather to show that you don't have to over think it. Fry that size will be fine.
