I use carib sea aragonite. While it's not easy on the pocket to fill a tank with the stuff, I like the look of it and it is fantastic for buffering pH. It is also a grain size slightly larger than sand, which makes a world of difference for syphoning detritus off of it.

I also use pool filter sand in a couple tanks. The stuff I got was $8 (or maybe 10) for a 50 lb bag right from a pool store. It's just pure silica with little flakes of black granite (that I assume are there because they don't bother processing it out) that give a cool look to the plain white sand. The PFS looks great and is cheap, but I find it a bit of a hassel to vacuum. Although, at $8/50lbs, a little bit of wasted sand isn't a huge deal.

as a size note, in the tanks that don't have aragonite as the substrate, I fill a filter sock with it and stick it in the filter for buffering and it seems to do a good job.
