Default Hello everyone! I got a 135 gallon tank from my buddy need advice!

2008-2010 I had a 125 gallon and purchased a group of Chilanga from Greg that had soooo many fry i had to start giving them away there was 4 males 12 females….. I sold them and purchased a group of Ikola from Greg and they had quite a few fry but as with life i lost a lot in a divorce and have been getting back on my feet for some time! Just last week it hit me, I miss my Tropheus and my fish tank!!!!! I first started looking at getting a 55 or a 75 then maybe a 90 and things started getting out of hand fast this is when i got a call from my good buddy that has a nice near new 135 gallon tank with built in Oceanic sump nice top lights stand etc……. He has kept two red belly piranha in it for couple of years with zero issues and decided he would sell it complete to me for $400!!!! My plan is to get it tomorrow, set it up keep the piranha until i can sell them and in the next few weeks make a purchase with Greg for a nice group of Trophs!!!!! Questions i have for you guys are I have never owned a real sump before just been a hang on back guy 4(emp 400) on my old set up and worked great….. This sump looks to be 30 gallon or more and is an oceanic one very nice will this be plenty for a colony of trophs say 20-30?? What all needs to be done once the current piranhas are sold to get things ready for the trophs? I will have plenty more question and pics and can't wait to get this going again!! Thanks to everyone in advance!! CD

Welcome. The sump should be fine. I have multiple 75s with 30+ trophs that stays crystal clear and I only have sponge filters in them. and they breed like rats.

All you should need to do is sale the current fish, and check your water parameters. you want a PH of around 8.0 or a little higher. and a temp of 76 to 80.

I need some advise on breaking this all down i went and looked at it and plan on picking it up tomorrow. I have a 30 mile drive from his house to mine and don't want to break aquarium, kill fish, or mess up the good bacteria in the sump… I plan on draining the tank and removing the black sand and tossing it, put fish in large zip lock bags and into a styrophome container to keep heat, what do you guys say to do with the beneficial bio media in the sump so its ready to go once i get home and refill tank? I don't look forward to this move but can't wait to get it going in my house!! Last question is what to do with two large illegal fish i would like to know where to sell them legally?? Thanks again!!

I would suggest Rubbermaid Totes with lids and air. This way there's more water for the fish and that will hold the heat better. But at that short of a distance and a heated vehicle, they do fine.

Just keep the BB and media in water and you're good to go.

Congrats on what sounds like a great deal! If it was me I'd keep no less than 30 in a 135. That sump should have no problem keeping up with them. If you find that its not good enough for your liking just add a canister filter to help out. But I doubt you'd need to.

I didn't know there were places where it's illegal to have RB Piranha. Where do you live? If its illegal to own them then it's just as or more so to sell them. If that's the case then I'd euthanize them and move on.

The Red Bellies are Illegal or just in your state?

I thought it was the Blacks that were illegal?

Or am I being to presumptive?

Or asking to many questions!?
