Every thing is inthe sump. The 406 is strictly for biological filtration and is full of eheim substrat pro , it is opened once a year, as the maxi jet 1200 pumps it from the clean side of the sump through the 406 and returns it right back where it started, after it goes thru the sock. The only thing in my tank is the return that exits out of the overflow box.

I also have a maxi jet 900 running thru a bio reactor with substrat pro, but hat returns back over the drip tray to keep it full as I have added a 1 inch poret foam pad on top of drip tray.

I believe in all 3 types of filtration, mechanical so that I don't see the debris in the water, biological for the fish and chemical for the polish look. I just today put in the high dollar hydrocarbon from Julian sprung. I had no idea how big or small 4 liters was, it shows in a bucket, like a homer bucket style, except it is tiny. I figure it is 2x more expensive than the marinland

That makes sense now - I didn't realize you were sending the 406 through the sump Good luck with the JS Hydrocarbon - That's the 1st time I've heard of it, and there doesn't seem like there's a lot of info on it. Is the main benefit the higher flow rate? I've been using Chemi-Pure for a longggg time - I've always been happy with it so it's been a while since I've thought about trying something different carbon-wise.

I am running all of my main pump water through the carbon chamber in the sump. My chamber is 13x6x2. I use a bag that is 7x14 and fill it about half way. My tank usually looks the best the morning after new carbon, today it did not look any better than with the marineland carbon.

So is there more to it than meets the eye?

Today is no better, so far I am not impressed with the hydrocarbon.

Last night while surfing the net with the new faster iPad air (had the original) and bought a 18 watt uv sterilizer. I am going to see if it does anything, otherwise I am only out $52

Has anybody had any luck using a uv sterilizer ? Can you run them 24/7?
