Well It's a risky thing. There are few reasons. They will graze on it natrually, if water is hard that seems to make them grow slower for some reason in my experience (which may be a freak expereince) and they need a more of a sandy substrate to thrive as well as some plant food and good light to keep up with the constant mowing from the Trophs.

I'm exeperimenting with some Vals in a 40g breeder fry tank. They are doing well as the Substrate is mostly sand with some aragonite mixed in. I have a light right over them on one enf of the tank for a good 7 hours or so everyday and they are close to a window and get some amient light as well if the shade is opened. I also use a Hagen liquid plant food and I see constant new sprouts and the leaves have finally started not dying off. So I think that it's possible in the right circumstances.

Other have said that an aquatic onion does well with trophs as they don't facy the taste.
