I just converted my 1 meter x 40 x 52 Malawi tank and am thinking about a colony of trophs. How many can I safely put in the tank?

Your tank is only about 208 l, so....50 gallon, more or less. Your tank is rather low limit for a Tropheus colony. You can keep in it no more than 12, maximum 15 Tropheus, especially species that do not exceed 10-12 cm.

In a 55 gallon I had success breeding 12, four to five inch golden kasumbas tropheus.

In another 55 gallon tank I had success breeding 25 three to four inch red moliro trophies.

Its all about the filtration in your tank. The more you have, the more filtration you need, especially in a 55 gallon tank.

I'd get 25-30 small ones.

Grow them some and kill off the males. Final number 15-20 fish.

Thanks, but the 2 or 3 stores in my area all seem to think 1 meter is just too small for a colony.

So I just put in 14 Demasoni @ 2-2.5 cm. Now I'm looking for some Rustys (5-6 individuals) to add, and keep it a species tank.

I'll wait for the Trophs until I get my 1.5 meter tank sometime in the next month or so.

Thanks for the advice.

Good move rphox2003, wait till the time is right. when you have all your equipment for the larger tank, get fry or juvis so you can watch them grow up.

Kill off the males? That's cruel. IMHO, you need to look for another hobby.
