I strip my females around 1.5 to 2 weeks using a paperclip opened up to 90 degrees using one end as a handle. this way no sharp ends are able to poke them or the eggs/ wigglers IF they squirm. I will normally gently press the corners of her mouth soI don't have to pry her mouth open and slip the paper clip in and twist 90 dgrees to open the mouth. works very well and safely!

Stripping the females has no affect on the female in future broods OR the Fry when they spawn as adults. It's a natural instinct to hold the eggs to protect them for African Cichlids. So don't worry or listen to those that say that it does.

God Bless!

I'm excited to be pondering this question myself right now, one of my Ikola is holding and I don't think any of these fry will last in the "Lions Den". I set up a breeding net and am planning on stripping as soon as I see some little eyes staring at me from her mouth.

I let my Red Rainbows spit in the tank then net the baby's and put them in a grow out tank. I have three females holding now and I think that I will strip them next week. That's if they don't spit before.

Good News! Thanks for Sharing!

If you don't have a Tumbler and don't want to make one (Very Easy!) then wait a good 3 Weeks from the time that you noticed her holding and you should be good to strip them then. The Fry are Okay to be put in a tank even if they still haven't consumed all of the eggsack. If they still look like they have a Big belly then they will be fine in a tank by themselves until they can swim normally.

Good Luck and Keep us updated!

I strip some fish, after theyve held atleast once before then I do it. Never had any problems, stripped 7 females a week ago and got 50 fry, lost 10-15 eggs to mold so I believe I have about 35-39 left and growing well. I also already have another 3 females that I will be stripping on Jan 12

it really depends on what your trying to do. if your trying to sell fry or to make your colony bigger then strip but if you just like to see nature take its course then just let them hold and spit them herself.
