Ok so we know they are still young so they are not full color. But, that does not explain why they are showing the wrong colors. From my experience, young fry of the same kind do look the same unless one is stressed, then it will look different. For the most part, they should look close and definitely have the same colors. Red dorsal sounds off to me. You should try posting better pictures that show both variations for comparison. Somebody on here should at least be able to tell you if you have two different types of tropheus or not.

Thank u rufretic. That's what I thought. Seems to be too big of a difference. I figured that yes they change color to dark when angry. Even stripey. But some just seem yellow and red. The others are dark. And yes I do water changes. 15-25% weekly. They are in a room that doesn't get too much people action. Even so they love it when I walk up to the tank. The black ones are a little larger. I'll post a photo on here of a few mixed ones together.

And look at my icon. That's a dark larger one. Looks like it's getting a sunspot.

I'd give them more time, they don't look so different that I would say they are different fish. They do look similar to my moops around the same age. I see what you are seeing as red in the dorsal but that is definitely not a red dorsal. When we talk about red dorsal I think most are thinking a solid red complete dorsal, which a lot of other trophs do have but not yours. In time the true colors will come in and you'll know what you have for sure but I personally wouldn't worry at this point. Did you get them from a reputable source? If yes, then odds are they are correct.

I'd did. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I've never has tropheus so I have no idea. They are great fish. Adorable no matter what color. ☺
