Depends on type of filter. Canister filters? Sponge filters or HOB filter. I clean my FX5s about 1 time every 6months. I never clean my sponge filters. I would say the HOB filters get cleaned with flow slows or in case of an AC filter, when the top pops up

Also depends on how heavy you feed and how heavily stocked your tank is.

Aquaclear 110 HOB, about every 2 weeks. Eheim 2262 canister, every 2 months - anything more than 2 months, it becomes a nitrate factory for me.

I have a trickle filter with bio balls...I rinse the sponge clean of solid waste in stage 1 of the filter monthly...I never clean the balls...every 3 months or so I clean the bottom of the sump of the fine particulate waste that settles in the return chamber.
I use purigen directly in the flow of stage 1 to assist denitrifying my water also.
Probably over kill on my cleaning regime for the filtration type I use but I like a nice clean system. Since all the beneficial bacteria I need to preserve the life in my tank live in the bio balls chamber of my trickle system I am OCD about the cleanliness of everything else
