I always go with bare bottom tanks and sponge filters. BB tanks are easy to keep clean and makes it easy to spot carcasses if you happen to lose any. Water change routine depends on may factors...size of tank, amount of fry, etc. Years ago I did 50% wc almost every other day and lost many fry on a regular basis. Everything I read at the time suggested that frequent, high volume wc was the way to go. These days I just keep them like regular fish. Fish that are under 1" seem more sensitive to cold water gassing and any changes in general and I've had great success and minimal losses by changing 25-40% every week or two.
