G'day troph's peeps...
As you may have heard we Toledoans are under a total water ban advisory due to cyanobacteria released from blue green algae blooming in Lake Erie contaminating our water supply. Fun! So anyway some reports say it is toxic to animals & plants as well as humans, but others say it is still safe to consumers fish caught in the lake. It cannot be boiled or filtered out as the toxin binds to the water molecule itself. My routine wc day is Sat which un fortunately was several hrs after the advisory. So for now I have stopped feeding to minimize any further nitrate build up. I have purigen in my sump. Not too stressed about it but realistically with many weeks of summer still go this prob may not go away quickly. My question to any troph's crew with water chemistry science is this; to water change or not to water change, that is the question? Cheers for any advice or input. Danny |

I can't answer this, nor would I want the responsibility of giving an incorrect answer. My best advise is to call your local university and ask to speak to the biology professor and ask your questions. I know our local university professor has answered our questions in the past

Glad I live on the good end of the lake. We just have dead spots.

Ha ha funny one Greg...I love my troph's but I think I'd rather they be the crash test dummies for the supposedly clean water than me!

Have you ever considered getting a storage tote? I bought a used one on Craigslist for $100 that holds 300 gallons. I had to pressure wash it a few time with HOT water but I've used it for several water changes with no issues. Also if you city treats water with chlorine (mine certainly does), this gives it a chance to boil off. Just a thought for next time. I understand it doesn't help you right now....

Glad to hear they got it under control and hope there have been no issues for ya. Our local reports said it was cyno, but am guessing it may have been something different.
