with most rock dwelling cichlids (which tropheus are), they generally do better in a larger footprint, since it gives more room to spread out territories and aggression. I could be wrong about this, but if you're comparing a tank that is 2 feet tall and not very long, and a tank that is longer but shorter (ie. has more surface area), the latter one is probably the best bet.
