Cycling the tank is required?

Hi Guys,

Really need to know that if I have an empty bare bottom just tank ( maybe half a cup sand n gravel mix ) if i fill the tank with the main tank water and fix a small filter do i still need to cycle it?

i filled 75% of tank water and 25% fresh water, it had some green algae from before as it was kept in sunlight with 25% water in it then i throw all water and cleaned as much as i could.

Thanks :)

you should always cycle a tank b4 adding fish...doesn't matter how big or small...the biological process of fish respiration & waste breaking down into ammonia necessitates a mature filter to ensure the health of your fish...
is teh small filter new? you can add filter media (sponge, noodels, bioballs) from a mature tank to it to start up your grow out tank, but never add fish to a tank that has no biological capacity to deal with the waste produced...that spells certain death, especially to fish sensitive to water quality, like troph's
