Whats your thoughts about keeping Petrochromis and Tropheus in the same tank?

I have had petros and trophs toghether in the same tank two times and every time has the trophs get really fat and get bloated. They eat to much and are more agressive to get as much food as possible. I have noticed that petros need much food to get in good condition and therefor needs to be feed several times daily. This is a problem for the trophs who gets too much food.

Have you guys experienced the same?

I have a good experience with keeping Duboise Maswa and Petrochromis Trewavasae moliro together,none what so ever with those problems written above!both groups where breeding ps.both type of fish had the same size...
Also a group of Ilangi`s together with petrochromis orthognathus tricolor chaitika,and in this tank there where only 12 ilangi`s and they was the minority...a little video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xYH1t1JnGs later on i actually added some Julidochromis regani kipilli in this tank still with succes....have heard several stories about petros and trophs together,and in the end it seems like the best solution if u want to try,u will have the best outcome with trewas and tricolors togetger with trophs!

I think I have had the opposite experience.

I had Famula chimba with my Ilangi and both got their fair share of food but the petros a little more then the trophs.

Then I kept Trewavasae with my Ulwiles and again the petro got a lot of food since I was feeding my troph colony heavily.

Never got any problems with bloat and I feed a bit extreme compared to everyone here.

My colonies get 22 feedings a day totaling about 10tsp per day of NLS/Dainichi pellets.

I have kept them together with no problems except that the Trophs stop breeding.

As far as food, I feed the Petro's a 3mm pellet and the Trophs a 1mm pellet or flake.

The Trophs can't eat a large pellet so I have no issues. I only feed them once a day though sometimes twice to get them in good condition and not so thin.

That is alot of food! They must be plump , but happy

From my little experience, I kept a singleton with my old colony but I had none of the problems mentioned above. The singleton had about the same amount of food as any of the tropheus. The petro was bigger than any of the tropheus but didn't really hold down any territory inside the tank (he might have thought the whole tank was his).

The petro did do a little herding from time to time which was cool to watch.

I have kept them together with no problems what so ever.

That seems to be the general rule. Maybe we should be looking for more specific answer. Like what sp. of petros kept with what sp. of trophs and at what size both sp. were.

I am quite extreme with feedings and think that if I were to approach it like the avg. hobbyist then there would not be much noticeable difference.

I just added a singleton Moshi to my Ilangi colony so we shall see for a third time.

How is he doing in there?
