I'm expecting the arrival of my first Petrochromis soon....... :ac15: :ac15: :ac15:

Petrochromis orthognathus Tricolor.
I'm pretty excited...... so I thought I'd start a thread and ask folks to post some pics of theirs, and tell us about their experiences with them...
I hear they're pretty laid back as far as Petros go?

Thanks!

I have a group of 18 of them and like them a lot. They mix in great with all other types of Petros and even tropheus. Not the most colorful of species but what color they do have makes them quite interesting IMO. Not the meanest Petro's I have seen in general but some can get aggressive. I think it depends upon their tank status. Meaning, if there are large macro's in there they mind their business...

I think you have made a great choice and will be very happy with them.

I had a nice wild group of those from OWEF. 16 or 18. Pretty peaceful; not a lot of color, but the males could light up. They never showed much spawning interest - that is until i sold them.

Another stupid thing I did.....

Tricolors started the petro craze for me  I started with WC 3M/3F and now I have 14. The males are the most colorful and mellow compared to other types. You will love them.

i got 15 fry in the 1" range about 9 months ago -- the parents had come from old world exoctics and were breeding prolifically in a 75g. the biggest are now approaching 3". i have them with 8 petro. trews, 3" range as well, in a 180g, and they appear to be very mellow, compared to the the trews. the tricolors tend to stick together, similar to tropheus, while the trews are really never near each other except for feeding time. will try to get a few pic's this evening . .. . .

Here's some pics of my adults. The males I think have nice color to them.

I really think tricolors are a great starter Petro if someone isn't willing to lose fish.

I just did a water change on Saturday on my other Petro tank and did 50% came back 20 minutes later and 1 of my Petro's got destroyed in that time...........put him in a hospital tank and well I already said their soft.

He's gone now.

Anyway here's some pics.

Yes, I think so. Tricolors are avoided by the Petros I have kept with them and I have not seen them attack other Petro's let alone each other.

The worst I have seen is the eggs in tumblers eating the other fry. :banghead: Kinda stinks when your trying to get alot of fry.

Mike had some really nice looking tris. I would have picked them up but I felt stuffin them in a 125g as a sin. :(

heather,

nice to see you re-stocking your fish collection. Many would have given up after seeing so many die off.

I have my 9 Tris in a 10 foot long 300 gallon tank with 28 Red Rainbows. My Rainbows are breeding like rabbits. My Tris are not. As matter of fact, they show no interest towards one another. I suppose that is good in regards to aggression. :)

Thanks MJ!
Been keeping fish since I was 3.... no reason to stop now! A week long power outtage during 0 - 15 degree weather wasn't my fault.... but I have a generator now, so it won't happen again
